Bicycling for Charity and a Worthy Cause - California Wildfire Case Study

The California Wildfires of October 2007 were devastating indeed and many people want to raise money to help. Unfortunately, there are many non-legitimate Scam Artists that come out of the woodwork after big Natural Disasters collecting donations and pocketing the money. Well, as far these 23 California Fires being Natural, I am not convinced that the California fires were all Mother Nature - at least some appear to be arson.

In any case the Governor of Cal-E-Forn-E-Ah, "The Governator" has warned California citizens to be on the look out for scams trying to collect money. Stating we will not tolerate Scam Artists or Arsons; "We will hunt them down!"

Currently, I am writing an eBook "Biking Across America" and I will have a section on raising money for a cause, thus this case study is worthy of mention. You see, Many Americans wish to help after big disasters, but they do not know how. Others know where to send money, but they do not trust big organizations and feel their contribution will be lessened if they just send money that way.

Some folks want to "Do Something" like have a car wash and send the money, this also creates awareness and makes them feel like they did something, it helps heal from the week of tragedy and stress they saw on their TV sets. It makes things all better again.

As we speak, I am in training to ride from Canada to Mexico and then from San Diego to Virginia Beach. I intend to raise money for a cause myself. So, I worked out a trade to secure an expensive bicycle, as a hobby Internet writer, I had an Online Article Marketer pay for an all-carbon Ten-Speed in trade for putting his link at the bottom of the articles that I wrote. I paid the rest and accessories. When I am done raising money, I plan on auctioning the bike off in a raffle for some charity, as well, as I am sure I will be completely tired of riding it.

After the California fires, Eddie Rose, a College Student from Bethel University in Saint Paul, MN contacted me after hearing about the recent wild fires in CA and having decided to bike the Pacific Coast to raise money for families that have been affected by the fires in some way. He plans on selling pledges, but was unsure of the best way to go about doing it. He had read that I had been sponsored by a company and they bought the bike for me to ride on the trip.

The dedicated student from the University was wondering how I went about getting that sponsorship and any suggestions that I might have to helping him find a sponsor to, one that might support him in some shape or form? Yes, well I think I do have some advice for him and here it is:

The Pacific Coast ride is cool, you need to look up Bike Centennial Route, it comes in three-maps, which will keep you on the safest route, about $45.00 - This time of year it is rainy and you need to be careful. Do not ride at night on Friday or Saturday, near cities do not ride near rush hours. It is a great ride, totally scenic and beautiful. It's a long way and along the way there are stretches of nothing for 40-50 miles in some places, so you need to plan your ride before and day by day. It gets cold in some places after dark.

The Best way to sell pledges is to find organizations that are already helping the Fire Victims and have them sell the pledges and then let them keep the money for their group, that saves the paper work and keeps it legitimate. The best groups are those with lots high-energy young people in them. For instance;

Civil Air Patrol Cadets,

Boy Scout Police Explorers,

Key Club (Rotary for kids in HS)

Why? Because kids are good at selling pledges and their parents will take pledge sheets to work. Since these groups also want to help and are already in the community, the money has a better chance of doing some real good. It also teaches kids unity with the community, good citizenry and a hard work ethic - selling pledges is not easy at all.

My thoughts are contact many groups (20 or more) allowing them to sell pledges for the same bike ride, as each helps their own community. This way you ride once and they all collect for each of their groups - you get a multiplier effect - duplication if you will. They sell pledges, collect the money, and handle everything.

If you find a bike shop willing to give you a used bicycle, then I recommend that you do that, you do not need a new bike, it will be very used by the time you are done, trust me. You need a bike light and fast and you will have a sore butt, but you can make it in 12 - 15 days or less if you ride hard. And those are my thoughts in helping communities, help themselves after a major tragedy.
